I’ve been rehearsing a couple of settings of the Lord’s prayer with the choris recently: Otčenáš by Janáček (which I blogged about) and Pater Noster by Verdi (which I think I mentioned in passing). These are going to be part of a concert in Paisley Abbey. Last night we were singing yet another setting, which is going to be included in a very different event.
Video Games Live is an event that has toured the world featuring music from video games performed by a live orchestra and choir. The RSNO are including the event as part of this year’s summer season, which means we get to sing along with classics like Sonic the Hedgehog, Zelda and Final Fantasy. It is mostly oohs and aahs for us, but amongst the other bits of random Latin, Greek and complete gibberish is Baba Yetu – the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili, from the game Civillisation IV. We spent a good ten minutes last night just getting our tongues round the words, but once we got the hang of it, it started to sound good.
All of the music sounds like it could have come form the soundtrack of the latest blockbuster movie, but the concert itself – complete with light show, video projections and interactive games – should be fun.
Hi Stephen,
I came across your blog when I did a search for myself. Thanks for mentioning my music….I hope you enjoyed singing it!
Best wishes from California,
Christopher Tin
Hi Christopher,

The VGL event is tomorrow night and rehearsals are going well. I think Baba Yetu is definitely a favourite of the chorus – so much more cheery than most of the other pieces!
